Adam Sandler made an epic comeback at the box office — or at least the parts of him you can’t see did.

“Hotel Transylvania 2,” co-written by Sandler and featuring his voice talents as Dracula, scored the biggest September opening ever for a movie with $48.5 million over the weekend, according to final figures on Monday.

The animated film also was the biggest opening for Sandler since “The Longest Yard” a decade ago and topped the original “Hotel Transylvania,” also featuring his voice. His more recent on-screen efforts, including this year’s “Pixels,” have flopped.

“The Intern,” featuring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway, debuted at second place with $17.7 million, followed by “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” in third with $14.2 million.
