“My heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Louisiana,” the writer-star of the film said on Twitter on Thursday night.
Police identified John Russel Houser, a 59-year-old “drifter” from Alabama, as the gunman who opened fire Thursday inside the screening at the Grand 16 Theater in Lafayette. Authorities were still trying to determine a motive.
Universal Pictures, which released “Trainwreck,” also released a statement: “All of us at Universal Pictures send our heartfelt sympathies to the victims of this senseless tragedy and their families in Louisiana.”
Lauren Palliser, a witness of the shooting, told WDSU-TV, of the chaotic moments as gunshots rang out.
“Definitely sheer panic — mass chaos,” she said. “There was a couple of people who were, I guess, maybe unaware of what was going on.”
