‘Knight of Cups’: Christian Bale Interprets Director Terrence Malick’s Drama
You may be slightly confused by “Knight of Cups,” and that’s okay.
“This is something very different,” Bale told Made in Hollywood. “It is more akin to music, to a book, where you actually have your own very personal attachment to it. You might not understand the lyrics of what the singer is saying entirely, but the feeling is one that you adore. Or it strikes a chord within you that is very meaningful for your life.”
‘Knight of Cups’: Bale Joined By Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett and More
The movie, set in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, centers around screenwriter Rick (Bale)’s quest to find himself while encountering unique individuals and making questionable decisions. After suffering a traumatic experience, the scribe indulges in Hollywood’s excess. The cast features Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Antonio Banderas, Brian Dennehy, Freida Pinto, Imogen Poots, Isabel Lucas, Teresa Palmer and Wes Bentley.
This type of movie requires viewers who are “adventurous in their filmmaking choices,” Bale said, adding, “I think there will people who don’t want to have just your usual cineplex experience.”
In a previous interview, Bale said he found Malick’s spontaneity refreshing and often shot scenes himself using a GoPro. “Sometimes they’d say, ‘go drive around LA a bit with one of the actors’ or ‘go into the ocean and swim’ to see if they could get something worthwhile.”
“Knight of Cups” opens March 4.
