Damon Wayans Jr and Jake Lacy on Why 'How to Be Single' Is the Anti-Rom-Com

“How to Be Single” is the anti-rom-com.

“It’s finding your happiness–being able to be complete with yourself,” costar Damon Wayans Jr tells Made in Hollywood, “and when the time is right, adding that other person into your happiness.”

The ensemble comedy’s core cast includes Dakota Johnson, Leslie Mann, Rebel Wilson and Alison Brie as they navigate heartache and hangovers in the Big Apple.

Jake Lacy echoes that the theme of the movie is that being single “doesn’t mean you have to be lonely.”

“That’s the journey that Dakota, in particular, goes through in this movie,” he adds. “You see her come to this city young and single, and she ping-pongs around until she finds that’s it okay to be by yourself.”

Starring opposite the four ladies’ love interests, Damon describes his widowed character as “unsure” about romance. “He’s stepping back into the dating pool and doesn’t know if he fits there yet.”

Lacy plays a confident single who “knows who he is and what he wants.” Adding, “He has a casual encounter and knows he wants it to be more.”

“How to Be Single” opens Friday.
