Ghostbusters Opens Behind The Secret Life of Pets at the Box Office
“The ‘Ghostbusters’ world is alive and well,” Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution at Sony, tells The Wrap. “I expect ‘Ghostbusters’ to become an important brand and franchise.”
“Ghostbusters” did seem to weather the social media backlash for its all-female casting and Fall Out Boy’s reworking of the theme song, the $46 million, second-place opening appearing mostly to reflect some soft reviews and the tough competition from “Pets,” which had $50 million in its second week.
“The Legend of Tarzan” starring Alexander Skarsgard and “Finding Dory” with the voice talents of Ellen DeGeneres competed for third place with about $11 million each. That brought “Dory’s” summer haul to more than $445 million.
“Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” rounded out the top five with $7.5 million.
