“Mad Max: Fury Road” was named as the year’s Best Film by the National Board of Review, it was announced Tuesday.

The action film directed by George Miller and starring Charlize Theron won the award program’s top honor, besting a list of the year’s top 10 films that were also recognized by NBR that included a mixed bag of hit films like “The Martian,” “Straight Outta Compton” and “Inside Out.”

NBR president Annie Schulhof said in a release that it has been a “banner year for popular cinema.” “We are thrilled to be awarding George Miller and Ridley Scott (“The Martian”), two iconic filmmakers at the top of their game, while also celebrating the next generation of talent.”

The National Board Of Review annually chooses winners in many categories, including acting, directing, writing, and a best movie of the year, in addition to a list of the year’s top 10 film. Critics, professionals, teachers, historians and students are among the members who determine honorees.
