‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’: Nia Vardalos Wrangles Original Cast for Sequel
Opa! The boisterous Greek family from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” has reunited for another trip down the aisle.
Nearly 15 years since the first film became an infectious hit, history repeats itself for the loud and loveable Portokalos-Miller family.
“We were so happy to hear that the whole cast wanted to come back,” Nia Vardalos says of the original players returning, including John Corbett, who played the culture-clashing All-American object of her affection, Ian Miller, in the 2002 film, which earned a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination for Vardalos. The rom-com concluded with the pair eventually marrying and having a baby girl.
‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’: Culture Clash for the Ages
Vardalos’ sequel picks up close to “real time,” says Corbett. “We’re just doing what everybody else our age with a 17-year-old does—that’s be miserable,” he says of his character Ian and onscreen wife Toula (Vadalos).
Elena Kampouris plays their daughter Paris, who feels like the black sheep and is eager to leave for college far from the roost. “Paris is struggling with her overwhelming Greek family,” explains Kampouris. “They’re suffocating, they’re a bit overbearing, but they mean well.”
“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” opens March 25.
