Mya Taylor Makes History as First Transgender Movie-Acting Award Winner

“Tangerine” star Mya Taylor made history as the first transgender actress in U.S. history to win a major acting honor when she received the Film Independent Spirit Best Actress award.

During the award ceremony held in Santa Monica, Calif. on Saturday, Taylor thanked director-writer Sean Baker and recalled how she was doubtful about the indie film’s success after learning it was going to be shot on an iPhone.

“What I want to leave with you guys today is, there’s transgender talent,” she added, “you better get out there it put it in your next movie.”

Caitlyn Jenner backed a Oscar campaign for Taylor ahead of the Academy Award nominations, thought she wasn’t nominated.
