As the host of the 2016 Golden Globes–his fourth turn at the podium–Ricky Gervais plans to continue a tradition that helps calm his nerves.
“If I didn’t drink I wouldn’t be brave enough to say some of the things I’m going to say,” he admits Wednesday to Ellen DeGeneres during an interview on her talk show.
“Well, it starts very early,” he says, adding, “So I probably have a little one.” Gervais hosted three Globes shows consecutively from 2010-2012 and spared no one–taking aim at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie and Robert Downey Jr.
Viewers will likely be at the edge of their seats when he takes Hollywood to task when the award programs airs live on Sunday, especially because one of his favorite targets was recently announced as a presenter at the award show. “Mel Gibson is presenting an award at The Golden Globes,” he tweeted, “Thank you Jesus.”
The Golden Globes will air on Jan. 10 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
