Welcome to the seventh heavens.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” lived up to galaxy-size expectations and then rocketed past them, becoming the number one opening movie in North America of all time with $248 million, according to weekend estimates.
That topped the previous record of $209 million set just this summer by “Jurassic World.”
Factoring in overseas revenue, the seventh installment of the epic franchise could top $1.5 billion.
“The enthusiasm has really turned into a cultural event,” Dave Hollis, Disney’s executive vice president of theatrical distribution, tells the Associated Press. “It’s unbelievable.”
