'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Passes 'Jurassic World,' 'Titanic' at Box Office


It was very happy new year indeed for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

The seventh installment of the storied franchise collected another $88.3 million to blast by “Jurassic World” and “Titanic” on a course to become the all-time domestic box office champ within days, according to estimates.

With $740 million in North America after three weeks, the J.J. Abrams-directed film should top all-time earner “Avatar’s” $760 million by next weekend.

The holiday weekend also was good for Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in “Daddy’s Home,” which finished second with $29 million, while “The Hateful Eight” leaped up to third with $16.2 million after expanding to wide release in its second week.

“Sisters” with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey was fourth with $12.5 million and “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” was fifth with $11.8 million.
